Claims vs Attributes

We don't blame you if the stress has left you reaching for a bag of cheetos...
But, the bottom line is we've hit information overload.

Long story short, one of our team members was once a part of the problem...
Plastering a package with call-outs, claims, certifications and badges like it was a warming its tires for a Nascar event. But he's in recovery and we're not going to put him on the spot...

To make things simple, we're going to break up the marketing lingo used by food and beverage brands into three categories.

Claims:

A.K.A Nutrient Content Claims, are statements that describe the level of a nutrient content claim as is defined by the FDA.

Attributes:

Unlike claims, attributes are simply statements made by the manufacturer that have not been defined by the FDA and are therefore unregulated.

Certifications:

Certifications consolidate a products claims and attributes, packaging them up neatly in the form of a badge or seal. With varying degrees of standards, auditing and ingredient controls; the verification of the products attributes becomes that of the third-party.

In any case, claims and attributes and certifications all need a supporting Nutrition Facts Panel to make them factual.

I'm pretty sure I don't need to tell you this, but this Nutrition Panel should be found on the panel directly to the right of the front panel and looks like the below.

Here we will go over the most common claim language or on pack terms, what they mean and how they're regulated.
